I can’t believe I am already planning another school year. It feels like we just started the 2017/2018 school year. Yet, here we sit. I am planning for a coming school year and I am adjusting to so much change. I want to share our 2018/2019 homeschool curriculum choices in case it helps you plan for the coming year.
Our 2018/2019 Homeschool Curriculum Choices
I think it is important to share that there will be some big changes to our homeschool in the coming year. My daughter will be going to a charter school she had her heart set on. My son on the other hand, will be staying home.
With the new job I am working, my husband has been stepping up and handling most of the homeschooling. I have had to learn to let go and trust my husband as he does things completely different than I do. With that our coming year definitely has some flexibility with how our curriculum will go.
I will sit here and type all of this up and then two weeks from now my husband will tell me he wants to change things. As things change, I will update this post so that you can see what we have going on.
My Oldest
She is enrolling in a local charter school. That said, we can definitely supplement. For her, we will maintain a Teaching Textbooks 3.0 subscription to supplement where needed. We are also working with Cursive without Tears for handwriting as she’s needed to strengthen with her cursive handwriting. Beyond that, I will follow the lead of the school and work with her educational abilities or needs.
My Youngest
My son is growing up fast and he is becoming a much stronger learner. I will share some of what we plan to use as well as some of the areas where I am not sure in case you have a recommendation.
Math
Teaching Textbooks Level 4 –We are still huge fans of Teaching Textbooks. You can read more about Teaching Textbooks here. I love that there is an online learning component and a strong focus on independent learning. The online component means that I can help him while I am working or my husband can step in and work with him.
Reading
We are big fans of letting kids read what they love and build a strong love of reading. This year we will be adding in book reports for each book he goes through. We will also be adding in the Who Was and Who Is books for some non-fiction reading. I will be sharing an updated book list in the coming months as we pick out some of his titles.
Writing
Writing is an area where we will be spending some more time this year.
My son will be starting Cursive Without Tears for handwriting. This is his year to start working on cursive writing and getting a bit more confidence there.
We will also be adding in some fun writing prompts as well as some other great writing exercises to build confidence with writing.
Science & History
We have changed things up and moved to Power Homeschool. It’s been a great option for him so far and he is really responding well. I like that it is self grading and I am able to check in on his progress.
Keyboarding and Computer
My son has a huge love for computers and coding. We will be adding in some of the hour of code courses on Khan Academy. We will also be putting more of a focus on keyboarding and building stronger typing skills.
Life Skills
This year I am going to make more of a priority of working on some of the life skills I prioritized with my oldest. That means we will be getting in the kitchen and cooking together, teaching him how to shop smart, and working on learning how to mow the yard. I look forward to working on some of these things with him as he is growing up way too fast!
What will you be using this year? Leave me a comment and let me know.

I’ve got a kindergartener 3rd grader and 5th grader. We’re using my fathers world kindergarten and rome to reformation. Math lessons for a living education for math. Lots of copywork and dictation for the 2 oldest for language arts plus language lessons for today. This is my first year teaching one in kindergarten so i’m a little bit apprehensive but i know she will do great!
