Jack Skellington Costume DIY – Jack Skellington Costume

When we set up our trip for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party we decided this is the year we go all out with costumes and have some fun. My son wanted a Jack Skellington costume. That said, it’s also Florida so it’s very hot. We decided to simplify the look of Jack Skellington and do a Jack Skellington inspired costume instead.

Jack Skellington Mickey Ears

Supplies:
Headband
Sharpie – Black
Cotton Balls
Black Foam Sheet ( I grabbed mine for 33 cents at Wal Mart)
White Foam Sheet
Hot Glue
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Cardboard

Make your Jack Skellington Mickey Ears

I used the video below for the tutorial on the ears but I have also included step by step photos from the ones I made.

Now for a photo step by step if you aren’t a video person.

Start by finding a cup or circular item the size you want your ears to be. 

Trace 2 circles onto your cardboard. 

Cut out your cardboard circles. 

Place your circle under the headband in the position you will want your ears attached. 

Draw a line to represent the headband. 

Take your circles and move them to your fabric.

Trace a circle a 1/4-1/2 inch bigger than your cardboard. 

Cut off the headband lined portion of your cardboard. 

Use the remaining ear piece to draw the ear design on your foam. 

Cut out your ear shapes from your foam. 

Once you have your circles, match two up inside out. 

Make a dot to mark so that you only sew 3/4 of the circle. 

Sew 3/4 of the circle. – If you don’t own a sewing machine you can hand sew this portion.

Flip your ear pieces right side out.

Put your cardboard and foam ear piece inside the fabric ear. 

Stuff your ears with cotton balls. – You don’t have to do this step if you don’t want puffy ears.

Fold over each section and then hot glue it together. – For this section fold it over itself before gluing so the frayed section doesn’t show.

If you made my mistake and used the wrong headband, hot glue a bit of ribbon to the area will your ear will go so that it has something to stick to. 

Hot glue your ear on. – You may need to double up to make sure it holds. I would hold it in place for 40 seconds or so.

Using pencil draw your spider web and your curve with the moon behind it. 

Use your sharpies to trace the pencil outline for this portion. 

For the bat, I looked at this picture of it. I free handed it on black felt. 

Use white foam to accent your bat. 

Then hot glue your bat to the ears. 

DIY Jack Skellington Shirt

Supplies:
Black T-shirt
White Acrylic paint
Black Foam Sheet
White Foam Sheet
Hot Glue Gun

Make your Jack Skellington Inspired Shirt

Start by outlining a white v from the collar.

Paint the inside of the V white. – You may need 2 coats of paint.

Add a second V a bit larger outside of your white V. 

Paint white angled lines all the way up. This is your collar.

Add a white circle to the bottom for your button. You can use an actual button if you prefer.

Paint white lines curving inward to represent the stripes on the suit jacket. 

Paint your horizontal lines on the sleeves. 

This bat was done the same way as the one on the ears. 

Once you have your bat hot glue it to the collar of the shirt.
