Is Incredibles 2 Appropriate for kids
Recently my son and I took some time to check out the Incredibles 2 prescreening. I have to admit that I have been waiting for this movie as long as he has! I have to say I was not disappointed at all! Whenever we screen a movie we like to ask if it is appropriate. Let me answer the question for you. Is Incredibles 2 appropriate for kids?
Should we watch Incredibles 2 with our kids?
I did receive 2 pre-screening tickets to facilitate this review. However, that does not influence my opinions. All opinions shared here are 100% my own.
**Disclaimer** These are my opinions. I know that all parents have different standards for their children. Please understand that I am only sharing this from the perspective of my own parenting experience.
Was there cursing in Incredibles 2?
There were a few uses of the words crap and hell. If those are curse words in your home, be prepared for 2-4 uses of each in the movie. Other than that, the language was clean and there were no other words that would be bothersome.
Update from the comments:
Maybe you missed Evelyn saying “be damned”
I did indeed.
Was there sexual innuendo in Incredibles 2?
If they were there, I missed it completely. It was an all-around clean movie that did a good job of engaging parents without doing what some cartoons do and plugging in tons of sexual innuendo for the parents.
Was there violence in Incredibles 2?
There are definitely scenes that are more violent in this movie. The movie has a scene with someone being shot. While it does not show the person actually being shot, it shows the terror of the person and the gun going off before fading to black. If you have a child who will be upset by this you may want to skip the movie.
Also, there are quite a few fight scenes in this movie that get kind of intense for younger children. There is no blood and they do a good job of keeping it as kid friendly as possible while sharing the realities of being a super hero.
Expect fight scenes, explosions, and near death experiences in this movie.
Will Incredibles 2 scare my kids?
My 8-year-old wasn’t scared of the movie but I have a friend with younger kids who said hers were scared. There are some elements of this movie that will definitely scare younger moviegoers. If you have a child who is more sensitive it may be better to wait and see this movie when they are a bit older. I think a lot of this will depend on the child though. My other friend brought her 4-year-old and he had a blast!
Were there adult jokes kids could pick up on in Incredibles 2?
If there were, they went right over my head. This was a clean and funny follow up to the first movie! While there were storylines adults would appreciate, it wasn’t inappropriate for kids.
Were the themes of Incredibles 2 on the same level for quality as the first movie?
Definitely! I would say that this movie was above and beyond what the original did!
Were there any themes children might not understand in Incredibles 2?
The overarching storyline focused on some of how technology could impact us as a society. I am sure there are some kids who will pick up on this. However, most children won’t. There was also a focus on the roles of males versus females in the household that some children might pick up on. However, it was handled in such a great way that I don’t think it would be an issue.
Are you prone to seizures from strobe light effects? This movie features a lot of lights flashing in sequence that feel a lot like strobe lights.
But, was it a good movie?
100% YES!!!! I always worry when a sequel is announced for a movie I love. This was my initial reaction to the announcement of Incredibles 2. How could it possibly live up to the first movie 14 years later? The answer, easily! In fact, I would say that this move was BETTER than the first one by a lot.
The characters have real depth and show genuine flaws. I loved that they explored each real side of parenting. There were moments when a child didn’t want to eat vegetables, a teen girl locked out the world, and a baby let no one sleep. That is real life. They had fun with it but they showed the realities of parenting!
Let’s talk about one of my favorite things!
In this movie, Elastigirl has to get a job leaving Mr. Incredible to run the home. While they do highlight how hard it really is to be a mom, they also don’t minify the value of the dad. So many cartoons and children’s shows these days negate the value of a father in the home. In fact, the dad is almost the oof in every storyline.
While Mr. Incredible struggles to figure out how to handle the baby, work with common core math (why did they change math?), and deal with the emotional roller coaster that is managing a teen girl, he steps up and finds his own way to work this role.
The working mom
I also absolutely loved the realities shown of Elastigirl stepping into her role as a working mom. Incredibles 2 did a great job of showing the struggle with wanting to work but wanting to be there for the moments that matter with the kids. It was so refreshing to see a working mom depicted to struggled with balance but genuinely loved her job.
Thank you for the review! We can’t wait to see it! Frozone is the best!!
