Is Ant Man and the Wasp Appropriate for Kids?
Recently my son and I took some time to check out the Ant Man and the Wasp prescreening. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one. I have to say I was not disappointed at all! Whenever we screen a super hero movie we like to ask if it is appropriate. Let me answer the question for you. Is Ant Man and the Wasp appropriate for kids?
Should my kids watch Ant Man and the Wasp?
I did receive 2 pre-screening tickets to facilitate this review. However, that does not influence my opinions. All opinions shared here are 100% my own.
**Disclaimer** These are my opinions. I know that all parents have different standards for their children. Please understand that I am only sharing this from the perspective of my own parenting experience.
Was there cursing in Ant Man and The Wasp?
I counted 2 uses of the S word, 1 use of d word, and 2 uses of the A word. Other than those instances there was so no cursing or uses of strong language.
Was there sexual innuendo in Ant Man and The Wasp?
There were 2 or 3 sections but they were done well enough that my 8 year old didn’t even pick up on them.
Was there violence in Ant Man and The Wasp?
Yes. This is a Marvel movie so you will have to expect many action-filled fight scenes. They were not graphic or bloody though. Instead, they were fun plays on the different sizes Ant Man and Wasp could master.
Will Ant Man and The Wasp scare my kids?
This movie does such a great job of keeping things light and funny. There were one or two scenes that might have scared younger children but I honestly think the bad guy in Incredibles 2 would probably scare kids more.
You may have to explain to your child what Baba Yaga is but it is not a scary part of the movie at all.
Were there adult jokes kids could pick up on in Ant Man and The Wasp?
No. In fact, this was much cleaner than the PG-13 led me to believe. I was surprised to see that the adult jokes well implied instead of outright inappropriate.
Were there any themes children might not understand in Ant Man and The Wasp?
Some of the intense themes represented in this movie could be hard for younger children to understand. The loss of a parent and the way that is handled could be a trigger for children working through issues with the loss of a parent. Other than that, I don’t remember any themes that would bother children.
But, was it a good movie?
YES! I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time. We had an amazing time laughing at all the well-placed jokes. However, the movie doesn’t depend exclusively on humor. Instead, it takes a quality storyline and uses humor to keep the story moving. There was definitely depth added to some of the characters as they explored the roles of Ant Man as both a father and a hero.
It definitely painted a picture that a dad can make a come back and can show his strengths as a father no matter what his circumstances are. I loved the portrayal of a strong father figure who fought hard for his child. I think Hollywood needs more flawed fathers who step up in spite of their shortcomings!
Let’s talk about one of my favorite things!
You know this STEM loving mom had to love this movie! Not only are there are great examples of the ants and what strengths they have that would benefit Ant Man. I noticed the use of their super strength but also their ability to work together as a team.
In the beginning of the movie we see a STEM masterpiece that pairs imagination and boxes in a really fun scene. I won’t spoil it for you. Just don’t be surprised if your child asks for a lot of boxes to try their best to replicate this scene.
The Female Super Hero
I loved the use of a strong female hero in this movie. They skip the old skanty clad female hero and focus more on her skills and knowledge as her asset. I really was impressed with the use of a strong female lead who not only kicked some butt but also had some incredible intelligence to go with it. It was definitely awesome to see a female lead with a strong understanding of Science and the ability to drive and steer the show.
