Harry Potter food is popular for parties, movie nights, and special theming for different events. Because of the popularity of the Harry Potter book and movie series, finding food that goes with it has become quite common. In fact, we love to make Harry Potter snacks for our movie nights. When researching food options for our movie nights, I realized there needed to be a home for all kinds of Harry Potter food. I hope this post can be that place for all of your old and new favorite Harry Potter food ideas.

Harry Potter Themed Food

I have broken this post into sections to make it a bit easier to navigate. Click on the topics below to navigate to the food topics you are looking for.

Harry Potter Food Ideas

Harry Potter food ideas cover the internet. It can be a bit overwhelming when trying to plan to make a meal inspired by the books/movies. Don’t let that discourage you though. I have spent a great deal of time looking at Harry Potter themed food to find the best options for you to enjoy! Here are a few of the best Harry Potter recipes I see!

  • Butterbeer Recipe from House of Nash Eats
“A tall mug of delicious Harry Potter Inspired Homemade Butterbeer is a fantastic treat any time of year, but especially during the month of October! Witches, wizards, and muggles can all celebrate this magical season with one of the sweetest beverages in the wizarding world!”
**Pro tip – I HIGHLY recommend uses rum extract in this recipe. Use half of the measurement offered for butter extract. It won’t have alcohol but it will add a necessary layer of flavor.
  • Treacle Tart from Daring Gourmet
“A buttery, flaky pastry crust is filled with a sweet and gooey lemon-infused filling, this traditional Treacle Tart recipe features one of Great Britain’s most famous desserts at its best!”
  • Kreacher’s French Onion Soup by In Literature
“One meal that Kreacher serves Harry, Hermione and Ron, is French Onion Soup. From what I can tell, what differentiates French Onion Soup from just onion soup, are two points. 1, It uses a meat based stock 2, Commonly served with melted cheese croutons (these croutons seem to be all baguette slice sized)”
  • Polyjuice Potion from An Edible Mosaic
“In the magical world of Harry Potter, Polyjuice Potion allows the drinker to transform into someone else. Our version features butterfly pea flowers in a delicious color-changing minty lime herbal brew. It’s perfect for a Halloween celebration or Harry Potter-themed party!”
  • Steak and Kidney Pie from In Literature
“I knew from feedback from my first Harry Potter themed dinner party post, it was time I brought a savoury dish to the party. Steak and kidney pie it was! Based on Mrs. Beeton’s recipe”
  • Roasted Turkey Legs from Let’s Taco Bout It Blog
“Ron snuck up behind the pacing Harry, “You can’t do it alone, mate.” Ron grabbed Harry and hauled him back to the celebration shoving a humungous (and juicily dripping) turkey leg in his hand. Suddenly Harry’s 17-year-old anatomy took over. He was ravenous! The herbed leg was devoured in a moment and strangely the world looked a little brighter.”
  • Cornish Pasties from Good Food Stories
“When I first read the Harry Potter series, it wasn’t the magic that most appealed to me, or even the boarding school setting—it was the feasts. You know, plates and plates heaped with roast chicken, shepherd’s pie, mashed potatoes, and my personal favorite, Cornish pasties.”
  • Golden Snitch Peanut Butter Balls from Fun Money Mom
“Love Harry Potter? These Golden Snitch themed peanut butter balls are perfect for your Harry Potter party or movie night.”

Food in Harry Potter

One of the most iconic things about the set design of the Harry Potter movies is the elaborate food sets they built. Incorporating food into the set naturally didn’t involve leaning on easy foods that were quick to mockup either. Instead, they leaned into the design to create a larger-than-life food world where everything looked amazing. It’s one of the main reasons that people look for ways to make the food at home. Here are a few highlights of the food found in Harry Potter movies and books!

  • Aunt Petunia’s Cake from Popcorner Reviews
“There are a lot of great moments in the early films, but one that will always be memorable is when Harry meets Dobby the elf for the first time in the Dursley’s home on Privet Drive. Yes, technically Dobby was trying to save Harry, but things definitely got a little messy. I’ve always been amazed by Aunt Petunia’s pudding cake (pre-Dobby mischief), and finally, I decided to make a version of this cake myself, sans pudding!”
  • Fever Fudge from Instructables
“Inspired by the inventions of the Weasley twins in the Harry Potter books, these two-sided confections are the perfect blend of hot and cool.  Eating the red half will cause the heat to rise in your head.  Cool the heat by biting into the blue half.  This version of Fever Fudge may not affect muggles as strongly as it does wizards.”
  • Gilly Water from Whip and Wander
“Though it’s not clear exactly what the book version of Gillywater is comprised of, one can assume that it likely includes a base of gillyweed and water. In the books, gillyweed is a magical plant that, when eaten, temporarily “gives the consumer gills, allowing them to breathe underwater, and webbing between the fingers and toes, allowing them to swim underwater with ease.””
  • Chicken and Mushroom Pie from Mission Food
“A classic British savory pie in miniature form, these individual Chicken and Mushroom Pies are the epitome of comfort. Inside a perfectly flaky crust is a luscious chicken and mushroom filling that totally satisfies. This particular version is in honor of Harry Potter, since he enjoyed mini pies such as these throughout the books.”
  • Liquid Luck from In Literature
“Since many people want to make these recipes for kids, or not everyone drinks alcohol, I decided this needed to be a quick and simple tutorial on making a molten gold syrup that could be added to your favourite drink, rather than a specific recipe. For this to keep its Liquid Luck appearance, however, you’ll only want to mix it with either clear or yellow drinks such as: apple juice, lemonade, soda water, and Sprite.”

“I decided that I’d make it a chocolate birthday cake, like the one Hagrid gave to Harry when they first met, but uh, much better tasting (remember Hagrid’s rock cakes? haha). I tried to keep the appearance much like the one in the movie though: a bit messy, strangely pink and green, and in need of spell check.”
  • Flying Broomstick Snacks from One Little Project
“These are sooooooooooooo easy, and they are so freaking cute!  All you need are some pretzel sticks, some string cheese and some chives (although, if you are in a hurry, the chives are totally optional).”

“The Monster Book of Monsters is from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling.”

“These Harry Potter cupcakes are immense fun for Hogwarts fans. Each butterbeer cupcake is filled with a stash of red, green, blue or yellow candy drops, (representing each of the 4 Hogwarts houses) which remains hidden under a swirl of butterbeer flavoured buttercream until bitten into. They are a fun way for fans to find out their house.”
