My daughter has been begging me to teach her to sew. I have been putting it off because life gets busy but this is our year for sewing. The family member who used to teach her passed away over the holidays. I decided taking the time to teach R to sew would be a great way to honor my aunt. She taught me so much and now it is my turn to do the same for my daughter. I will be sharing sewing with kids projects with you in the coming year as we learn new things. Today we worked on a DIY pillowcase that will be easy and fun for you to try with your kids.

You will need
Start by washing and ironing your fabric.
Please don’t skip this step. This step is very important. If your fabric is wrinkled it will be harder to work with later on. Your child can handle the ironing as long as they are taught how to do so safely.
Line up fabric for cutting.
The corner of your fabric needs to be even with the corner where measurement begins on your mat. After your fabric is lined up, you will want your ruler straight up from the 32 inch mark.
Cut in a straight line.
You want to have your child cut this 42 inches long. Then turn and cut the wide piece so that it is 32 inches wide. When you are done you should have a piece of fabric that is 42 inches long by 32 inches wide.
Flip your fabric print side in. and line it up.
Your child will be sewing their pillowcase inside out and then flipping it. Make sure that it is print side in.
Sew a straight line.
Your child will need to sew a straight line down one of the long sides of the pillow case and one of the short ones. Your pillowcase should look like a big sleeping bag at this point.
Fold over the opening.
You want about two inches. We did not measure but you can if you are not sure about this section.
Sew this section.
For this R pulled her pillowcase over the ironing board our sewing machine was on. This made it easy for her to rotate the pillowcase as she worked. You will want your line to be about a 1/2 inch from the edge.
Flip inside out.
Once you flip your pillow case inside out it will be done.
