Paper Mache Christmas Treat Bowl - Great Gift Idea!

What you will need:

Paper Mache Christmas Treat Bowl - Great Gift Idea!

  • Balloon – You will need one for each globe. Pick a bright color. It will help you later.
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup Flour
  • Shredded paper. – While newspaper works well, if you have old white paper I recommend using it. It makes it easier to paint with less coats.
  • Twine or String – You will need about a foot and a half. You will also need another foot in addition separated.
  • Paint – You will need Red.
  • Mod Podge
  • Hot Glue Gun
What to do:

  • Start by mixing Flour and Water to make a paste – I recommend using a wire wisk to get out any lumps in the mixture.
  • Blow up your balloon – Pick the size you want your globe to be and blow up your balloon.
  • Tie your twine to the top of your balloon. – You will need to hang it to dry later.
Paper Mache Christmas Treat Bowl - Great Gift Idea!
  • Dip Strips in glue flour mixture and wipe off excess – The paper strips only need to be moistened.
  • Start with a single strip around the spot you want to be the top of your bowl. – This will give you a reference point and keep things mostly smooth.
  • Stick to balloon and smooth out. – Make sure to have your child rub the strip down so that it doesn’t have any lumps. Lumps now will set that way as it dries.
  • Check for holes and patch them – Holes in the paper will dry as actual holes in your globe. Have your child make sure to check for spots that aren’t covered. This is where having a bright colored balloon comes in handy. You don’t know how hard it was to find holes on the white one.
  • Let dry overnight.
  • Pop Balloon – Use a needle and pop your balloon.
  • Paint. – It may take up to 3 coats to get a nice dark red without the newspaper showing.
  • Use a hot glue gun to attach your twine to the outside. – I recommend going around it with twine. Then cut the twine and tie a bow. Glue the bow on after.
  • Add a coat of Mod Podge – This will seal your bowl and keep the bugs out of it. Let dry for 24 hours.
  • Fill with treats and share or enjoy.

Dear Supermom – An honest letter from the other side of Super Mom Land

Dear Super Mom - An honest letter from the other side of Super Mom Land (Not what you think)

Dear Supermom,
I met you today at swim lessons once again. We have been talking politely about things. You have been a great mom comforting your hot baby during what should be his nap time. I commend you. You are doing an amazing job supporting your oldest with swim lessons while caring for your little guy. As they moved us from one location to another for mandatory safety lessons you gathered up everything and found a great spot to be part of what was going on. At the end, you were feeding your sweet boy and they were done. As you rose I noticed you were overwhelmed. Stroller filled, baby eating, towels, and a ton of other stuff to carry. I offered to help and you politely denied. Once more I offered to push your stroller so you could feed your sweet boy and you let me. Thank you. Thank you for putting down your cape.

You see, I was you once. I was the mom juggling everything and trying to do it without any help. I wanted to be super mom. You know what I was? Tired. I wanted so bad to look like I had it all together. I wanted to be supermom. You know the one? The one with her baby on her hip, a great group of friends she always has time for, a perfectly clean house, and the grocery cooler in her car for snack time. I wasn’t though. There were moms who wanted to help me. They wanted to do as I did for you today and lift my load. The problem was, I was too proud. I thought I had to handle it.

Now I am on the other side of super mom land. My babies aren’t babies anymore. I have school aged children and I see moms struggling in super mom land. I want to help but I am told no. Even when they don’t have it together they carry the load alone. Thank you for giving me a chance to offer you a hand. You may have thought that offering to push your stroller was pity or saying you weren’t enough. You are enough. By letting me help you, you are showing how strong you really are. You may never know how much of a blessing it is for me to help you out but thank you.
Your friend,
The happily average mom.

Ditch the Training Wheels this Summer the Easy way!

Ditch the Training Wheels this Summer the Easy way!

I am probably the worst possible person to teach a child to ride their bike. I just don’t have the patience. That being said, R can now ride her bike without training wheels! About two weeks ago my husband left for the week for a work thing. Can you guess when my daughter decided she was ready to ditch the training wheels for good? That’s right! That weekend. I decided to head to youtube and find an easier way to teach it.
I stumbled upon this video and I was sure it was too good to be true.

I decided we would try it with R. I will say that I left the pedals on and taught her to just ignore them. If you are not good at removing the pedals this is a possibility.

R worked for about thirty minutes a day for three days. There were a few falls. There were some moments of frustration on her part but she kept at it. Below is a video of her progress in just 3 days.

It has been two weeks. R now begs me to take her out to ride her bike daily. She zooms up and down the street with extreme confidence and smiles as she rides. The beautiful part of the whole thing is that I did not hold her bike or touch her at all. She learned this with only my words of encouragement. Your child can do it too.
