Crafting can be a great way for kids to have a creative outlet, share the way they see the world, and even have fun learning. While some parents are born with a crafting gene, not all moms are inherently crafty. Taking some time to craft together can be beautiful and an art kit can be a great start for crafting. I wanted to share some tips for getting kids crafting.
Getting Kids Crafting
This post will feature the iHeart Art Mash Up Art Pack Paint & Pastel set. We received the art set to facilitate this post and the craft represented here is made with the supplies found in this kit. (All opinions shared in this post are not influenced by this set. Instead, all opinions are 100% our own.)
Pick out a quality art set
When working to get kids crafting it can be tempting to try buying all the supplies for each of the different crafts. This can quickly get expensive and leave you frustrated. Instead, it can help to buy a quality art kit with some of the best items you could use instead.
When picking out an art set you will want to ask a few questions.
Questions to ask when buying an art set
- Are the supplies in the kit high quality? – Many art kits will offer a huge selection of supplies. However, not all craft kits are created equal! Make sure to pick out a craft kit that has high-quality supplies.
- Look at the types of crafts you will be doing. – Some craft kits will offer a large variety of supplies. Make sure to look at the items included in the kit and ask yourself if the items included are the ones you will need for your project.
- See if you will need companion items. – Not all craft kits will come with everything you need. Make sure to look at what comes in the kit to see if it is a good fit for your projects.
Start Simple
When looking at crafting projects it can be easy to look at Pinterest perfection and decide that it’s not possible. Instead of starting with big projects, start small. Find simple tutorials doing basic art concepts to start with. By starting with simple concepts you will be able to help your child build up the skills they need.
Take advantage of art tutorials
YouTube has a huge selection of art youtube channels for kids. These are a great place to start with simple art concepts. Many of the art tutorials found on youtube can be used for a variety of ages and skill levels. You can also find a variety of art tutorials online. Make sure they are age-appropriate and work with the skills your children are working to build.
Be honest about crafts you aren’t interested in
Not all crafts are fun for everyone. In fact, some crafts can be downright obnoxious. It’s completely ok to switch to crafts that are fun for you while enjoyable for the kids. This might mean skipping items like glitter or slime recipes. You might want to start with items like crayons, color pencils, simple paintings, or other low frustration crafts.
Easy Paint Drip Craft
This simple paint drip craft was put together by my fourteen-year-old. She wanted to share a simple craft that most anyone could find success with. This craft will involve minimal supplies and can be done by children of all ages. Take time to customize it to your child’s favorite colors.
You Will Need
- 5 colors of paint
- Paintbrush
- Canvas or Art Paper
Start by making a squiggly line. – You will want to make a simple dripping curved line across the page. Start with your darkest color or with the color you want to be on top of your art piece.
Fill in that area. – Take some time to fill in the top portion of the page completely with the same color of paint that you used to color the line.
Pick another color to draw your next line. – You do not need to match the line above or stick to any specific design. Make it look the way you like it to look.
Fill it in and repeat. – You will want to fill in each portion and repeat the process over and over until you fill the page.
Add white accents to give a more 3d effect. – You will want to make small curved white lines on some of the curves of your image.
Sign it and enjoy.
