All My Friends Are Toxic
All my friends are toxic is a song that is gaining popularity. As my son listened to the song, I paid special attention to the lyrics of all my friends are toxic. After all, if a song is catching his interest, I want to know what truths it is communicating. I won’t lie. The lyrics of this song kinda made me sad and made me remember all too well the years of middle school. I have a few things I want to say about this song so I am going to share the lyrics below and then I’m going to pull out some of the lyrics to talk more about it.

All My Friends Are Toxic Lyrics
****Important Disclaimer – I am not writing this post as an attack on the writer of this song. I am a huge fan of music artists who can share about the human condition. Even more, I am thankful to today’s musicians for giving me a glimpse of what my children are thinking and how they see the world. Instead, I’m writing this to address the underlying heart of the song.
I found these lyrics on this website and I want to post them as they are before discussing the actual song.
All my friends are toxic
All ambitionless
So rude and always negative
I need new friends
But it’s not that quick and easy
Oh I’m drowning, let me breathe
I’m better off all by myself
Though I’m feeling kinda empty
Without somebody else, oh
I hear you crying out for help
But you never showed for me
When I was ringing your cell phone
Oh, you don’t know
How it feels to be alone
Baby, oh, I’ll make you know
I’ll make you know, ohh
All my friends are toxic
All ambitionless
So rude and always negative
I need new friends
But it’s not that quick and easy
Oh I’m drowning, let me breathe
I’m better off all by myself
Though I’m feeling kinda empty
Without somebody else, oh
I hear you crying out for help
But you never showed for me
When I was ringing your cell phone
Oh, you don’t know
How it feels to be alone
Baby, oh, I’ll make you know
I’ll make you know, ohh
All my friends are toxic
The first line and overall theme of the song starts out by sharing that all of the friends are toxic. Having a toxic friendship can be one of the most defeating experiences. Are your friends toxic or are they just going through a hard time? Finding this out can make a world of difference. I have added a list of a few traits of toxic friends to help you decide.
- Do they respect my boundaries?
- Do they make me feel bad about myself?
- Do they encourage me to make choices that are good for me?
- Are they critical of me?
- Do they support me as much as I support them?
- Do they let me have other friends?
All ambitionless, So rude and always negative
When looking at friendships it helps to look at the overall tone of the relationship. A famous quote that is often shared is, “you are who you hang out with.” When choosing friends, it’s important to look at their character traits and ask yourself if they’re ones you want to copy. If your friends are ambitionless they may not be toxic but they may not be worth copying. As far as being rude and always negative, this can be a toxic behavior and is one you might need to reconsider.
But you never showed for me
When asking if a friend is toxic, take an honest look at how they do or do not show up for you. When you have a toxic friend it can be common for you to pour out all of your energy on them and get nothing in return. When looking at your friendships, ask yourself if you want to be in a friendship that isn’t balanced. It may be time though as it says in the song, ” I need new friends, But it’s not that quick and easy” to find new friends. Finding new friends will feel like work but the long term value will be worth it.
Oh I’m drowning, let me breathe
This verse is the most honest description of one part of a toxic friendship. Toxic friends can be critical and controlling. It can leave you feeling like you’re drowning under the weight of their expectations. Here’s the thing, real friends aren’t supposed to make you feel like this. Take the time to evaluate whether the relationship is one you need to stay in. It may be time to cut loose a toxic friend and find someone better to be around.
Oh, you don’t know, How it feels to be alone, Baby, oh, I’ll make you know
Here’s the part of the song that concerns me most! Having toxic friendships is a normal part of life. It’s something we have to learn from. Toxic friendships are there to teach us what we don’t want out of a friendship. They are there to show us how to do better in future friendships. However, they are not there to teach us revenge and anger. If you are dealing with a toxic friend, cut ties. You don’t need to make them feel what you feel. It won’t change them and it won’t heal you.
